When someone asks ChatGPT for a good family lawyer in their city, it names a few firms and often links to where it found them. Getting your firm into that answer is not luck. AI assistants recommend firms they can find, understand and trust, and each of those is something you can work on.
Nobody can promise a recommendation, and anyone who does is guessing. But the steps below make your firm far easier to name.
1. Let AI crawlers read your site
AI tools can only cite what they can read. Check that your robots.txt does not block crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Some website plugins and security settings block them by default without anyone noticing.
Also make sure your important text is in the page itself, not hidden inside images, PDFs or content that only appears after someone clicks.
2. Answer the questions clients actually ask
People ask AI assistants full questions: "How much does a DUI lawyer cost?" or "Do I need a lawyer for a car accident that wasn't my fault?" Pages that answer those questions directly, in the first sentence or two, are easy for an AI tool to quote.
- Give each practice area its own page.
- Open each page with a plain-language answer, then explain.
- Add a short FAQ with the questions you hear on consultations.
3. Make your firm's details identical everywhere
AI tools cross-check what your site says against what the rest of the web says. Your firm name, address, phone number, practice areas and attorney names should match on your website, Google Business Profile, legal directories and your state bar listing. Mismatches make a firm look less certain, and less certain firms get named less often.
4. Add structured data
Structured data, or schema markup, labels the facts on your pages in a format machines read reliably: who the firm is, where it is, what it practices, and which questions each page answers. It does not guarantee anything on its own, but it removes guesswork.
5. Earn reviews and reputable mentions
When an AI assistant recommends a lawyer, it leans on signs that real people trust the firm. That includes Google reviews and mentions on reputable sites such as legal directories, local news, bar associations and community organizations. Ask satisfied clients for reviews as a routine part of closing a matter, within your state bar's rules.
6. Check what AI tools say about you
Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your clients ask, and record which firms are named and which sources are cited. The cited sources show you where the AI is getting its information, and often which directories or articles you are missing from.
The firms AI assistants recommend are usually the ones that are easiest to verify, not the ones that spend the most.
Where to start
If you only do three things this month: confirm AI crawlers can read your site, rewrite the opening of your main practice-area pages so they answer the question directly, and fix any mismatched firm details across your listings. For more background, read what AEO is for law firms.
